General Structure of a 45-minute oral class
At Pioneer Education, we try to maximise the opportunity for children to speak and listen to English.
Lessons are planned based on children’s age group but are fine-tuned based on their oral competency.
Is 45 minutes a week enough?
The answer is YES! 45 min for an oral class is definitely enough for a primary school student. Please bear in mind that there is minimal writing involved i.e. 45 minute of intensive speaking and listening is adequate.
Primary 1 and 2
Primary 1 and 2 classes are mostly about consolidation of phonics knowledge by blending and segmenting of sounds.
Listening comprehension in the form of story-telling and question and answer will also be done to train up the listening skill of the little ones.
Primary 3 and 4
For Primary 3 and 4 students, we focus more on their oral competency. At the age of 8 and 9, they have learned enough vocabulary and sentence structure to present their ideas in a systematic manner. We aim to focus on the organisation of their presentation and may even do impromptu ‘Show and Tell’ or ‘Talent Show’!
Primary 5 and 6
Considering these are the ‘Pre-Secondary’ school years, the bulk of Primary 5 and 6 classes focus on interview techniques. The goal is to let these young adults prepare to communicate with strangers (interviewers) regarding current affairs by expressing their point of view and giving evidence to support their stance.
